MENE–MENE–TEKEL–UPARSIN
This is the interpretation of the
thing:
MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end.
Dan. 5:25-26
Introduction
O
n the night mighty Babylon fell to the Persians, this writing appeared on the palace wall: "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN" (Dan. 5:25), written with the finger of God. The king of Babylon was having a huge drunken party––they felt safe and secure inside the city with its massive walls. Then came the sudden appearance of the handwriting on the wall, which put an end to the party and replaced revelry with terror; and adding to their bewilderment, no one could as much as read the writing, let alone interpret what it meant!Then the terrified king called for Daniel the prophet. By the light of a candlestick, Daniel both decoded and interpreted the writing. It foretold the immediate end of Babylon and her king. So it came to pass: On that same night the king of Babylon was slain by her Persian conquers; a new era was born.
The writing on the palace wall is comparable to the greatest Writing of all––the Bible. For like the writing on the wall, some things in the Bible are mysterious and impossible to understand apart from God’s help. Only by the light of the candlestick (that is, by the Spirit of God) can a man understand its mysteries.
Most mysteries in the Bible have already been unveiled by the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ (Mk. 4:11; Rom. 16:25; 1Cor. 2:7; Eph. 1:9; 3:3-9; Col. 1:26-2:2; Rev. 1:20). Any further illumination of the Scriptures therefore must conform to and be built upon this finished apostolic foundation (Eph. 2:20), otherwise it is heresy.
There is one mystery expressly said to be "sealed until the time of the end" (Dan. 12:4, 9-12).
"Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end…None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1335 days" (Dan. 12:9-11).
In this book, the decoding
of these and other puzzling bible numbers are detailed.{1} However, its full interpretation and actual fulfillment awaits a future day.This final fulfillment awaits a future day because there are three stages to the detailing of this great mystery (i.e., of Dan. 12:9 etc.): These three stages are again occurring in the same order in which they did when Daniel interpreted the writing on the wall at the fall of Babylon.
First, there is the decoding of the writing itself; (i.e., understanding the function of the Bible numbers).
Secondly, there is the interpretation of that which is decoded, (i.e., the Scriptural interpretation of these numbers).
Thirdly, there is the fulfillment, (i.e., the culminated fulfillment of all things).{2}
This book unravels the first-stage of this mystery––the decoding of the numbers––with the date of the fall of Babylon, and hence, "the writing on the wall," maintaining a dominate theme throughout.
Furthermore, the second stage seems to have already begun upon completion of this first stage. The understating of the numbers is giving fresh new insight into all of the scriptures, especially the writings of the Prophets. Like lined-up dominoes, the obscure sayings of the prophets’ are leaping-forth in an endless parade of revelation.
Purpose and Scope
The PURPOSE of writing this book is not for entertaining the careless, nor for predicting the future. God’s purpose in explaining these prophetic numbers or time-periods at this time is to, demonstrate Jesus of Nazareth as the one and only Messiah; to give an answer to the age-old martyrs cry of "How long?" (Rev. 6:9-11); and to supply that final end-time-people (whenever that will be) with the skills necessary to understand "How long?" their trial could be, as foretold by all the prophets.
{
Just as the timing and nature of the first coming of Christ was misunderstood by the people of that day (John 7), so it shall be again before His Second Coming, to the likely bewilderment of that future end-time people.For this cause, enlightenment is given
at this time––so as to supply that future end-time-tribulation-people with a thorough understanding of the many complex time-frames possible, destined to emerge at that timeat that time, so that they may have faith and hope to endure it. For by recognizing the various time-periods and patterns in history, this future end-time people will be better equipped to correctly (but never perfectly) apply that knowledge to their own unfolding trial.}And as for we who are alive now at this present time, by super-abundantly exalting the SCOPE and magnitude of these numeric patterns, the Spirit has deliberately placed them far out of the reach of honest men who might otherwise innocently attempt to predict the future with them. For honest men must conclude, "His paths are past finding out" (Rom.11:33).
In an effort to keep things simple and on topic, large amounts of important information are relegated to endnotes, appendixes, and hyperlinks. Although most individual patterns are quite simple to understand, nevertheless, your entire concentration is needed to grasp the interrelationship of these individual patterns. It is the unity and interconnection of the individual parts (patterns) that radiates the highest glory––"Like a bride adorned for her husband" (Rev. 21:2).
It is also important that you read the chapters in sequence since there is a building of one brick upon another with increasing glory. For the revelation in the numbers is also indirectly the dimensions of the spiritual-temple of God, which is the Church––both corporately and individually––in that the numeric patterns exhibit both our limited, but His transcendent, handiwork (John 2:21; 1Cor. 3:16; 2Cor. 6:16; Eph. 2:21; 1Pet. 2:5; Rev. 3:12; 11:1; 21).
In short, it is a revelation of the dimensions of "both the goodness and severity of God" (Rom. 11:22)––its "breadth, and length, and depth, and height" (Eph. 3:18).

Endnotes:
{1} A gradual increase of light has come concerning the numbers ever since they were first given. The difference now is in the sudden detailing of these same numbers (Dan. 12:4).
{2} The revelation of this "time-of-the-end" mystery comes in advance of its full and final fulfillment, otherwise how can they be prepared if the knowledge of it has not been shed abroad in advance? Nevertheless, the full and final application of this revelation awaits that specific people who will live "at the time of the end." For the climax of all things occurs "at the time of the end," in sweeping culmination of all that went before it. (see Dan. 7:3-7 with Rev. 13:1-2). The importance of the revelation in the numbers is that it traces the various lines of culmination therefore aiding interpretation.
However, the fact that the first of this great mystery has just been opened is itself a token of that which "must shortly come to pass" (Rev. 1:1; 22:6)––but how "shortly" is anyone’s guess––10 years, 100 years, 1000 years?
