I have loved animals for aschildjoan.jpg - 5.58 K long as I can remember. Being raised on a Jersey Cattle dairy farm, my favourite place to be was in the barn. Helping my dad with the daily milking was one pleasure but I also greatly enjoyed 'assisting' both he and the visiting vets with our animals. Of course, we had the usual amount of cats and always several dogs at a time. They were house pets in addition to being working farm dogs. Most of my reading pertained to animals. So, my involvement later in life with Labradors was 'meant to be'.

Our first litter was born the end of November 1978. The lovely black male Am/Can Ch Banner's Cole Younger CD, whom was on lease to Sandy Briggs of Wimberway Labradors for a year here in Canada, was the sire. This breeding produced my first champion; a nice yellow female-Ch Amaranth's Aloha Misty CD, WC. 'Misty' was with me for a great many years and was a dear companion.

My goal is to breed Labradors with a sweet, gentle disposition and still retain that fun retrieving instinct. Males, as well as females, should have a lovely kind nature and that's what I want to live with. I get this over and over again in my Labradors so its a combination of good breeding, proper raising and lots of love. I have raised a family of three children and Labradors together. Today, my grandchildren equally enjoy the companionship and loving nature that makes up an Amaranth Labrador.

Amaranth Labradors are registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. All breeding stock holds appropriate genetic clearances. Puppies are homeraised and start to leave for new homes around 7-8 weeks of age. All have passed a veterinary health check, had first inoculations, deworming, and are tattooed. Reservations are recommended for puppies. Although most of my puppies are sold as family pets, Amaranth has produced numerous show champions, obedience and field titled dogs, hunting companions. I have dogs living coast to coast in Canada, in various US States and also in Europe.

As we move into 2008, Amaranth Labradors is entering into our twilight years. I have been quietly scaling back our numbers and services with the goal of still being active within the breed for quite a few years yet but within a manageable lifestyle for myself and the Labs.

Located on a hundred acre farm that is 90 minutes northwest of Toronto, ON Canada, there is lots of room for the dogs. 10 acres of woods and a spring-fed pond supplies the dogs with many interesting places to walk/explore and a nice 'pool' to cool off in afterwards.

Yours In Labradors,
Joan Calder and the 'gang'
