Katherine reports: The scheduled speakers through to June 2006 are as follows:
June 9th, 2006
Rob Leverty, our featured speaker, is from the Markdale area. Rob has done extensive work on the ramifications of cemetery closings all over Ontario. More and more sites are being required for housing, manufacturing and other businesses. Areas which contained small family plots are in danger. The interred are being removed to another location. Rob will discuss the latest information on cemetery closings. Meeting is 7:00 p.m. at the W.I.S.H. Centre, 177 King St. E., Chatham.
Oct. 14 (Saturday): Region One Meeting of the Ontario Genealogical Society, hosted by Kent Branch, to be held at the Active Lifestyles Centre, 20 Merritt Ave., Chatham, Ontario. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. Cost yet to be determined. Speakers for the Regional Meeting on October 14th, 2006, have been selected and have agreed to speak. Glenn Stott from Arkona speaks on the War of 1812 and Jerry Hind is to speak on the First Contingent from Kent in WWI. Lunch will be provided. January 13th, 2006
January speaker is Dave Benson (from the Chatham-Kent Museum) and his topic is "Learning Genealogy Through War Medals". This will be a "show and tell" presentation by Mr. Benson of war medals of WWI and earlier. Apparently then, the name of the recipient of the medal was inscribed on the medal. Meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the W.I.S.H. Centre.
February 10th, 2006
Tom Mountain presented the first portion of "Maps and Boundaries" last year and because of the vast amount of material to cover, this will be the second session. A fascinating topic with much information important to the genealogist. Meeting is at 7:000 p.m. at the W.I.S.H. Centre, 177 King St. E., Chatham
March 10th, 2006
Ken Turner from the Kingsville area will speak about graves of blacks who resided and farmed in that particular are of Essex County. Ken has done a great deal of research and has unearthed artifacts and information. Meeting is 7:00 p.m. at the W.I.S.H. Centre, 177 King St. E. Chatham.
April 7th, 2006
Arthur Pegg, a noted local historian, is our scheduled speaker. Mr. Pegg's talk is entitled, "Heritage Resources in Chatham-Kent; Local Character and Sense of Place vs. The Geography of Nowhere." **Please note the change of meeting date because of the Good Friday holiday on the 14th. this month's meeting is on the 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the W.I.S.H. Centre, 177 King St. E., Chatham.
May 12th, 2006
"How Did Your Parents Meet?" is the topic of tonight's meeting. As there will be many interesting stories to tell, please call Katherine Prout at 436-6195 prior to the meeting if you wish to share your anecdotes. Meeting 7:00 p.m. W/I.S.H. Centre, 177 King St. E., Chatham.
