Montréal, an island, takes its name from the "Royal Mountain", a scenic backdrop to the downtown core. With the mountain at its back and the stately St. Lawrence River around its shores,
Montréal, the second-largest of Canada's cities, is one of the country's most scenic urban centers. A major draw for tourists, it attracts over nine million visitors per year.

One of the country's oldest cities (it celebrated its 350th anniversary in 1992), metropolitan Montréal is also the second-largest French-speaking metropolis in the world, home to over 3.2 million people. Many other languages are spoken here too, because immigrants have come from every corner of the world, making Montréal a vibrant, multicultural community.

Montréal's architecture and its lively, fashionable people have helped to put it on the international map. The city has won accolades around the world especially since hosting two major events-EXPO 67 and in 1976, the Olympic Games. These events were followed by a myriad of international festivals--among them the acclaimed Jazz Festival, Juste Pour Rire/Just for Laughs (a bilingual comedy fest), and the Benson & Hedges Inc. International Fireworks Competition--colourful celebrations which have become annual fixtures in Montréal's social calendar.**
