The pen described below was
originally designed to fit a corner in my kitchen where
puppies are exposed to most household noises. The
original dimensions were 5 feet long by 2 feet 6 inches
wide by 2 feet 7 inches high including the casters.
However, measurements can be adjusted to suit your breed
and your available space.
Benefits:
- A
whelping box will fit inside this pen, allowing
the new mother jump in and out of the box, while
still containing her near the pups.
- When
pups outgrow the whelping box, the box is removed
and the entire pen becomes a play area.
- Housebreaking
is initiated when pups tend to mess on papers at
one end and sleep on the blanket at the other
end.
- When
not in use, it comes apart for easy storage.
- Many
puppy buyers borrow these plans to build a pen
that keeps the pup (and the house) safe when they
are at work.
Construction Is
Simple:
- Base:Build the
base support using 2inx4in boards. Cut notches
large enough to accept a 2inx2in neatly.
- Floor:Use 1/2in
plywood or particle board. Cut to same shape as
the 2inx4in base, and fasten on top of base with
screws and nails.
- Sides
and Ends:The framework is made of
2inx2in boards.
- Finish
with 1/2inx1 1/2in wooden strip as edging around
the base to close the "post holes". Use
screws on each side of a post location. Sides
will drop into these holes.
- Varathane
all wooden parts with several coats to
"pee" proof it, and to make it easy to
clean. Also your clothes won't snag on the wood.
- Staple
1/4in wire mesh to inside faces of the side and
end panels. The wire is stronger than door screen
and cannot be ripped, the 1/4in spaces are small
enough not to catch paws, and with the wire on
the inside, the wood and varnish cannot be
chewed.
- You
will need 4 hooks at each end. Measure the
location of the gate hooks and make them the same
at each end. That way all pieces are
interchangeable.
- Fasten
casters to base.
